Currently our data set covers the United States, UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and Republic of Ireland. Each record contains a complete set of useful location fields including lat/long coordinates, eastings/northings and elevation. For the complete list, and the differences between each country, please see the docs.
The data is updated every month. We also perform additional updates on an adhoc basis when errors are reported to us.
Data quality is our main priority. If you see anything that you think is not accurate please email support@placesapi.co.uk and we will investigate immediately. We very much appreciate your help in keeping the index as accurate as possible for everyone.
No. We chose Algolia as our service provider because of the incredible performance and scalability they offer, as well as a very mature suite of robust front-end tools for creating rich user experiences. When coupled with our data this is a powerful combination.
We've aligned some of our services with Algolia Places (e.g. front-end demos including InstantSearch integration) to make it easy to migrate when that service is closed in May 2022.
We allow a maximum of 20 results per search. For location lookups via autocomplete this is more than enough as the ranking algorithm ensures the top 5 are very likely to be what the user was looking for. If your implementation needs fewer results you can set this when creating your API keys.
As many as you need! Some users have just one, others like to have one per project, or even several per project when different options are needed in different situations. Each key has a name field so you can describe them.
No. Once a key has been created it can't be modified. To make changes you would need to remove the key and create a new one with the revised settings.
When creating a key you have the option to set an expiry in seconds. This is optional though, you can leave this field empty to create a key with no expiry.
Yes. When creating a key you have the option to set a maximum number of searches per IP per hour. Leave this field empty to create a key with no IP restrictions.
We've intentionally made PlacesAPI so it'll be familiar to users of Algolia Places. This is to aid the transition should users be looking for an alternative / replacement to Algolia Places that is still ultimately powered by Algolia.
Our JavaScript demos show how to create standalone autocomplete components as well as connected InstantSearch widgets.
Yes! Thanks to Algolia's own Autocomplete library and some custom code from our demo you can add a powerful location autocomplete widget to your InstantSearch integration in minutes, complete with routing and a separate (optional) radius filter widget.
Yes. API endpoints are rate limited to prevent abuse. You are allowed to make 60 requests per minute, after which you'll start to receive 429 Too Many Requests HTTP responses. Continued abuse can result in longer bans so please be respecful.
Yes. You may cache location results but we recommend refreshing at least once a week to ensure you have the most up to date data.
Yes. It should be more or less backwards-compatible so users of the Algolia Places REST API will feel right at home. There are some small differences though so be sure to read the docs.
Your billing day is on the same day of the month that you created your subscription. So if you signed up on 10th then your renewal payment date will be on the 10th of each month until cancelled.
When Stripe has processed your payment the invoice will become available to view and download via the Billing section of your dashboard. You'll also receive an email from Stripe after each payment or if there were any issues taking your payment.
We maintain an audit trail of activity so you can keep an eye on what has happened and when. You can access a summary of this information from your dashboard and a more comprehensive (and searchable) version under My Account > Activity.
We recommend using this feature as it provides an extra layer of security to your account. To use it you'll need to download and install the Google Authenticator app.
Once installed, open the app and click the + icon to add a new account. Visit your account settings, enable two-factor authentication and scan the QR code on screen to link your device. Once enabled you'll need to enter a code from the Google Authenticator app each time you log in.
We'd be very sorry to see you go but if you do wish to close your account you can do this under My Account > Settings.
When you close your account it is immediately disabled and added to a queue for permanent deletion. This happens at midnight GMT on last day of your billing period.
Your Stripe subscription will also be cancelled. If any usage has accrued, a final balance payment will be taken on your usual billing day of the month.
Your API keys will continue to function until your account has been permanently deleted.
Your account won't be deleted until after the last day of your billing period so if you'd like us to reinstate your account please get in touch ASAP and we'll do our best to help.
Send an email to support@placesapi.co.uk and we'll get back to you as soon as possible. We aim to reply to all emails within 24 hours but it's usually much sooner. You can also reach out on Twitter.
While we provide a good selection of demos for integrating Algolia Autocomplete and InstantSearch with our data, those libraries have too many options for us to provide direct support on. Algolia has excellent documentation and lots of additional examples to help you.
